Million Dollar Spaghetti

Quick Notes: Million Dollar Spaghetti is hardly an original recipe. It’s all over the internet. I’ve made this one my own with a little more of the ingredients I love. This could easily be made meatless, or with a meat substitute. I don’t know if this is where this recipe actually originated, but this is the first one I remember seeing, so I’m crediting here: https://www.spendwithpennies.com/million-dollar-spaghetti-casserole/

Ingredients

  • 1 lb spaghetti noodles
  • 2 24 oz jars of your favorite pasta sauce
  • 1 lb ground beef (or sausage)
  • 1 medium yellow onion, diced
  • 2 tablespoons minced garlic
  • 12 oz cottage cheese
  • 8 oz (1 package cream cheese) softened
  • 1/2 cup sour cream
  • 2 cups shredded mozzarella
  • 1 cup shredded Parmesan

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350.
  2. In a large pot, boil water and cook pasta according to packaging instructions. Salt the water to give it more of an "Italian" flavor.
  3. In a large skillet, start meat over medium-high heat. Once it gets hot enough to provide a little grease, add onions and garlic. Cook meat until it's well done. If there is a lot of excess grease, drain. Add one jar of pasta sauce to the meat.
  4. Meanwhile, add softened cream cheese, sour cream, and cottage cheese to a large bowl and stir until fully mixed.
  5. Drain pasta, and return to pot. Pour over the other jar of pasta sauce and mix until the noodles are fully covered.
  6. Pour noodles into a 9" x 13" baking pan. Top with the cheese/sour cream mixture. At this point, I like to use a pasta spoon to work the cheese mixture into the noodles a little bit. A lot of recipes advise you to leave this as its own layer....I'm not a fan of that, preferring the noodle-y mixture to be a little more cohesive after baking, and I think this provides that effect.
  7. Take the beef/sauce mixture and pour it over the top of the noodles. Smooth the sauce until it has fully covered the noodles.
  8. Use all your shredded cheese and fully cover the top, so you have melty deliciousness once baked.
  9. Put your now 500-pound casserole into the oven and bake for 30 minutes. If you wanna get kinda cray, you can totally switch it to broil and brown the cheese a little at the very end, but be super-duper careful or you'll burn the hell out of this and that's going to be disappointing.
  10. Let sit for 15-20 minutes before serving because this shit is going to be lava.
