Easy Spiced Wassail

Quick Notes: I made this with every intention of sharing it before Christmas cuz it’s a fucking Christmas drink. But….well, here we are in January. This Spiced Rum Wassail is like Christmas flavored jungle juice for people in their thirties, and it’s good anytime.

Ingredients

  • 2 gallons apple cider (apple juice is fine, but I prefer cider)
  • 750 ML of Captain Morgan Spiced Rum (or measure with your heart. I usually get a half-gallon and pour until I feel dirty, but this is the foolproof measurement)
  • 3 oranges
  • a small handful of whole cloves
  • 2 whole cinnamon sticks

Instructions

  1. in a large slow cooker, dump in your apple cider and turn it to high.
  2. Clove your oranges.  This just means to push the cloves into your orange's skin (see photo above). I finally figured out that using something to make a small hole in the orange before pushing the clove into the orange will go a long way to save your fingers.  Otherwise, they're going to be real sore.  It took me ten years to figure that out.  You're welcome.  You can put the cloves in at random, or make cool designs, but you want to end up with like 30 or so cloves in each orange.  This will help prevent them from all ending up in a pile at the bottom of your slow cooker.
  3. Slice your oranges into circular pieces. Try to avoid cloves as much as possible, but you're going to hit some.  that's ok. Toss them into the slow cooker along with your two cinnamon sticks.
  4. Put the lid on your slow cooker and allow it to cook for about an hour and a half on high.  Stir it a time or two. but you don't need to babysit it.
  5. Dump all your rum into the slow-cooker, close the lid and give it about 15 minutes to return to temperature.
  6. Use a ladle to serve.  Turn down to warm to allow it to sit for your guests (or yourself, I'm not judging).

Notes

You can definitely sub the captain morgan's out for a cheaper rum, but I've found that the "spice'' to this is perfect in this recipe. It saves you from having to go apeshit on spices and use cheesecloth and shit.
